A month ago at the Digital Book World in New York, New York University professor Scott Galloway said that Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google were dragons disrupting the publishing world. They are knocking the ball so far out of the park, eventually they will knock it into another sport. He labelled the Big 4 “the Four Horsemen”.

P for Publishing: could Google's Alphabet signal industry changes?

Google have announced a significant restructure, creating Alphabet as a giant umbrella company to host its smaller divisions.

Google itself will retain Search, Android, YouTube, Ads, Maps and Apps, as well as most of its technical infrastructure. The changes come with the management of the spin-off divisions, like the auto-driving cars, Google Glass, Calico and the business and investment funds. These will (if they haven't already) gain their own CEO's, and will be able to operate largely independently of Google, allowing the slimmed-down company to focus on what it does best.

Google vice-president Vint Cerf has made it abundantly clear this week that our digital media is not safe.

In a world where everything has become available in a digital format, it is easy to forget what those simple yet nostalgic print days were all about. We no longer file invoices in physical space, we simply drag and drop them from our desktop to a little folder where they can live happily ever after. They'll always be recoverable and will always be there when we need them, right?
