Facebook revenue boosts thanks to mobile advertising

Facebook’s shares are now at its highest level ever, up 71% from last year, due to a hike in mobile advertising sales on the platform.

Compared to last year mobile ad revenue on Facebook has increased 3 per cent over the last year, to make up 87 per cent of the total advertising revenue of the company.

How predictable is the media industry?

Not that predictable at all it would seem. A heavy reliance is based on the explosion of current affairs - and they can not be tamed.

The New Yorker put its site behind a metered paywall in November 2014. The expectation was that traffic would go down, and not much thought was given to subscription results. As it would happen, traffic went up by 30 percent within a few months and subscriptions grew 85 percent year on year.

Publishers and social media - a match made for digital revenue

With the migration from a large print audience to a large digital audience, publishers have had to adapt their approach when connecting with their audience. Their digital revenue models have shifted, and so has content distribution.

Print ad revenues have fallen for The Economist, and digital ad revenues have yet to make up for this loss. The Economist is not the only publisher who is struggling to generate revenue, The Guardian, whilst successful in their digital presence, have “managed to build a big reputation but no revenue”. Even The New York Times, who have more than 1.5 million digital-only subscriptions, say that;

“Scaled back: Why publishers are rethinking their pursuit of huge numbers”, a recent Digiday article discusses the numbers game that publishers are playing. By reducing the number of published stories, the theory 'quality over quantity' becomes a ruling principle, and impact on the readers reaching the ‘desired reaction’.
